dogsI have always been a "dog person" (I've always been a "cat person" too, but that's a subject for another day). All through my youth I had dogs around; big ones, small ones, dogs that were useful in working the cattle, dogs that were ... well, not so useful.
Some of our dogs (like Snoopy, a spaniel who was already old when we got him, who lived for another ten years afterwards, or like Skippy, the fat little Jack Russell terrier) were strays, abandoned by city folk out near our farm. Some of them we bought as puppies. Some of them lived for a long time, some only lasted a few months before being hit by a car. All of them were members of the family.
So, I feel a twinge whenever I read about people blogging about the deaths of their dogs. Losing a dog is very much like losing a member of the family. These memoriams are very touching: go read Claire Wolfe's remembrance of her dog
